Korean Global Income Tax Filing Self-Check: Do You Need to File?
In Korea, global income tax filing is not limited to full-time business owners. Freelancers, employees with side income, creators, landlords, and people with multiple income streams may also need to file in May, so it is safer to check your case before assuming the year-end settlement was enough.

When filing is usually required
- Freelancers and sole proprietors: business income generally needs to be reported.
- Employees with side income: lecture fees, writing fees, YouTube revenue, delivery work, blog earnings, and affiliate income can make filing necessary.
- People who worked at two or more workplaces: if income was not combined during year-end settlement, global income tax filing may be required.
- Rental income earners: housing rental income can require filing depending on amount and conditions.
- Financial or pension income over the threshold: interest, dividends, and private pension income can also matter.
When filing may not be necessary
If you only have employment income and your year-end tax settlement was completed, you may not need a separate filing. Cases with only non-taxable income, separately taxed financial income under the threshold, or only retirement income that was already separately taxed may also be excluded.
Why office workers should still check
Even if you are a regular employee, small platform income can change the answer. YouTube ad revenue, delivery app income, sponsored content, blog revenue, and affiliate earnings are commonly treated as business income, and missing them can lead to additional tax or penalties later.
How to confirm safely
- Open Hometax directly rather than using an unfamiliar link.
- Log in and go to the global income tax filing menu.
- Check whether the pre-filled filing guide appears for you.
- Review income categories such as freelance, platform, rental, financial, pension, and side-business income.
- If the case is unclear, compare the Hometax data with your actual income records before submitting.
Final check before May filing season
The simplest rule is this: if you earned income outside a single fully settled salary, check Hometax before the filing period passes. Filing when required is much easier than dealing with penalties or correction notices later.
