How to Change Your Korean Income Tax Refund Bank Account in Hometax
If your Korean income tax refund is approved but the bank account on file is old, closed, or missing, update it before the refund is processed. When no valid refund account is registered, the refund can be handled by mailed notice or check-style collection, which is much more inconvenient than direct deposit.
Change the refund account on PC Hometax
- Go to Hometax directly and log in with your normal authentication method.
- Open My NTS from the top menu.
- Select the refund account management menu.
- Review the existing bank account information.
- Choose account change or registration, enter the new bank account number, select the bank, and confirm the account holder name.
- Save the change and keep a screenshot or memo for your own records if needed.
Using the Sontax mobile app
You can also use the Sontax mobile app. After logging in, search for the refund account registration or change report menu, enter the new account information, and save it. This is useful when you need to update the account quickly before the refund is sent.
What happens if no account is registered?
If there is no refund account, the National Tax Service may send a refund notice by mail. Then you may need to visit a bank or follow a separate collection process. Registering the account in advance is usually simpler and reduces the chance of delays.
Important cautions before saving
- The account must generally be in your own name.
- A typo in the account number can delay the refund or cause a failed transfer.
- A closed or dormant account may fail and switch the refund to another handling method.
- Once the refund has already been deposited, changing the account will not move that completed payment.
Final check before the refund date
The safest time to update the account is before the refund status reaches the final payment stage. If the refund is still being processed, check Hometax or Sontax and make sure the account is correct now, not after the deposit date.
